Risorgimento Continued...

It has been a while since I revisited my 10mm Risorgimento project. Other projects and real life have interfered with this neglected lead pile. Recently I noticed Pendraken released some new figures to their 19th Century (Crimean I think) range. I have always wanted to paint up a Neapolitan Bourbon army to refight Volturno. With the release of Italian infantry in greatcoat by Pendraken, I decided these were a good enough proxy for my Neapolitans. I ordered some as well as some Austrian uhlans to act as Bourbon lancers. Here are my first two complete units:

\
Rear view of the Neapolitan line infantry. I am sure they are nowhere near perfect, but they are the best sculpts (and very nice sculpts at that) for the Neapolitans. They are depicted wearing the grey/blue overcoat with madder red trousers.

The flag is made from heavy tin foil and hand-painted. I am very pleased with how the foot turned out. The Neapolitans can't fight a lick, but they sure are pretty!

Some Bourbon lancers, I should mention the colors are darker than the photos indicate. Dang flash!

The rules for wargaming this when I get my armies complete will be Neil Thomas' 19th Century set. Now I need to paint lots of Garibaldini ti fight my Papal and Bourbons...

10mm Schleswig War Update...

Finished up some more units for my 10mm First Schleswig War project. Real life has impeded my progress a bit, but here are some additional figures, first up a second Schleswig-Holstein infantry unit and two Schleswig-Holstein jager units:

Also finished up a unit of Dragoons for each side. The blue comes out lighter than it actually is in reality due to camera flash. Below are the two regiments ready to come to grips with each other:

A closeup of the Schleswig-Holstein dragoons, only one pose (not including the command figures), but the arms can be adjusted to create more "movement" within the masses.

The Danish dragoons. The red tunics really "pop" with the light blue. Multiple poses.

Next up are some additional infantry and some artillery for both sides. I will follow that up with some command bases and yet more infantry....wish me luck.

Old and Older Projects

I have tons of 10mm figures from 19th Century Europe: Prussians and Austrians for 1866, Danes and Germans for the First Schleswig War, Papal and Garabaldini for the Risorgimento, and on and on... Unfortunately, most is unpainted. Anyway, here are some 10mm Danes and Schleswig Holstein foot:

Gotta love the pretty "chocolate box" uniforms of these guys. The figures are based for Neil Thomas rules. I need to paint more of these 10mm figures,
I like cast-on flags in 10mm, some of Pendraken's ranges have them, others don't. The Schleswig range doesn't have cast-on flags. I decided to add flags made from the tin seals on coffee cans. It is a thick foil and I am happy with the result.

This is a very old project from a decade ago: 6mm Maxmillian Adventure. Figures are Irregular, I thought of using DBA variant for the Civil War. The guys on the left are Imperial Mexican foot followed by Imperial Lancers, Austrian Legion (maybe Belgian, not sure) and finally Republican Mexicans. Nice little figures. The thing about Irregular 6mm; unpainted they look like little blobs of lead but when painted (and they paint easy) they really give a good depiction of what they are supposed to be.

Its been almost a year since I last posted, at the request of a friend and fellow gamer I begin 2013 with a post and a "pledge"; the pledge will be to try my utmost to keep wargaming expenditures around $30 per month (which is a drastic reduction). So,what have I been doing? One is buying a lot and painting a modest amount of 10mm figures for Neil Thomas' 19th Century European Wargaming rules. Specifically, the Risorgimento and the First Schleswig War:

My Fenian Project

After years on the backburner, I have finally decided to embark on my 15mm Fenian project. One of the problems, is that there isn't a dedicated range for the Fenian Invasions. The good news is that you can use some Maori Wars ranges, the bad news is that Maori ranges won't provide everything and there aren't many 15mm Maori ranges (maybe two). These are BattleLines 15mm painted up as the 13th Hamilton Militia (present at the Battle of Ridgeway).

The bulk of the Canadian force present at Ridgeway were the 2nd Battalion, Queens Own Rifles (QoR). The QoR were essentially uniformed and equipped the same as the 13th Hamilton, but in Rifle Green as opposed to the Redcoat of infantry. The Battle Lines range are all in the pillbox cap, while probably worn at Ridgeway, the official headgear was the quilted shako. I plan to find some figures with a suitable shako and then conduct some head swaps.

These chaps are the Welland Canal Field Battery. So, where are the guns? Apparently due to haphazard care and security of their Armstrong guns, the British military took them from them as punishment. They continued their duties as infantry. These figures were a small challenge. I couldn't find figures in busbies wearing 1860s British uniform. I took Battle Lines infantry and conducted a head swap with 18mm Crimean War Royal Horse Artillery (Eureka). Maybe not perfect, but I am pleased with the results. While not present at Ridgeway, the Welland Canal Field Battery were closeby, and the Canadians will need all the help they can get to have a chance at the refight of Ridgeway!

Here we have members of the Dunneville Naval Brigade. They were assigned to the tug WT Robb. The Naval Brigade was with the Welland Canal Field Battery at Fort Erie and will serve as reinforcements for Ridgeway.

Hopefully I will have some more Canadians converted and painted up soon. If anyone knows a good source for 15mm/18mm quilted shako proxies, let me know. Thanks!
