More TYW 10mm Progress

Slowly making progress on my 10mm Imperial army for the Battle of Fleurus. Since my last post, I had some reinforcements arrive in the mail (Minifig, Pendraken and Old Glory figures) and I was able to add them into the mix. 

My armies will initially be organized for those present at Fleurus and depicted in the In Deo Veritas scenario. The Imperial army has 4 early tercio units, 6 cavalry brigades, 2 detachments of shot, an artillery battery, 3 wing commanders and an army commander. 

Managed to finish up my 2nd early tercio unit (right), so halfway there. My apologies for the poor exposure and lighting, there was a deceptive amount of light and I took the snaps and uploaded via my phone. I added a MiniFigs musketeer in the front skirmish line. The rest are OG but I will add some Lancer ECW to the next tercio.

Here is the first unit of cuirassiers. I gave them a dirty red color to horse kit and dark horseflesh (with exception of musician) to give them a semblance of uniformity. Not all of the cuirassiers will be quite so uniform. Mostly OG sculpts with two Pendraken in the second rank. According to what I've read there were about equal numbers of cuirassiers and mounted arqubusiers so I will have 3 brigades of arqubusiers and 3 of cuirassiers.

My first unit of mounted arqubusiers. All OG sculpts with the exception of one Pendraken sculpt in the 2nd rank. I also did a bit of conversion on one of the riders headgear - swapping out the hat for the morion from a pikeman. I lopped the heads off, drilled holes and inserted a pin. Looks good enough for 10mm.

I should mention that I went with a mix of horse colors and a mix of pale reds, yellows and greens for the color palette of the brigade. For future units, I plan to have a brigade of cuirassiers in a violet/purple color which I believe is a livery color for Felipe da Silva - one of the Imperial commanders.

And here we have the one (and only) artillery battery for the Imperial army. Again, mostly OG lead on this base with the exception of the cannon balls and barrel in the rear of the base.

Last but not least, here are two detachments of shot. In the battle of Fleurus, these guys were from Tercio Verdugo and deployed in a farmstead -  causing significant problems for Christian of Brunswick and the protestant left flank cavalry. Almost all of the figures are OG sculpts, there are a few MiniFigs and a few more headswaps where musketeers in a loading pose ditched their monmouth caps and got morions helmets or brimmed hats as replacements. From what I understand, the monmouth cap was only common with soldiers from northern European areas (which makes sense). 

I have two early tercio units left to paint up, four more cavalry brigades and the commanders. After that, I will tackle the Protestant army.

 

10mm TYW for In Deo Veritas

It's been a while since I posted but I have been painting. The real bugbear has been photographing my projects. Recently I picked up the 17th century ruleset In Deo Veritas. After reading through a few times, I liked them so much to start up a 10mm Thirty Years War project with some bags of Glory ECW figures I had in storage. My armies will be based on the first scenario in the IDV rules, The Battle of Fleurus. 

At any rate, here are some pictures of my first Tercio:

I snapped these with an older iPhone so my apologies on the photo quality. With the Old Glory figures, I find they are easy to paint when they are primed black and block painted with simple highlights.

Here is an overview shot to show the Tercio formation. I went with a traditional pike block with some sleeves of shot and "manga" blocks of shot at the corners. All total, there are 31 shot, 24 pike and 4 command figures (standard, musicians, officer): 59 total figures. 

I tried to go with muted colors and a fairly limited palette. The lighting makes them appear a little more vibrant than they actually are.

I hadn't applied static grass on a base in quite some time because my results were always pretty dismal. I picked up the Noch puffer bottle and I have to say I was really impressed with the results.

 

15mm Afghan T-55

I've mostly been working on my 10mm Punic Wars based for "To The Strongest" (which I will ultimately post pictures of once complete). A little side project has been 15mm Afghan warlord armies. I plan on collecting two rival warlord armies and using AK47 Republic with them. I have motley collection of Flytrap, Flashpoint, Fireforce, Irregular and CP Models Afgans. 

Anyway, here is my first vehicle for the project. Its a PSC T-55 with some Old Glory stowage. The two tank riders and the chap manning the Dushka HMG are Old Glory Technical crew. The pensive looking tank commander scratching his beard is a Flytrap civilian.

Same tank, different angle. I magnetized the turret which was tricky but well worth it. Once the tank was assembled, I primed it Soviet green and painted the non-green areas. Next came a diluted wash of Army Painter Strong and Dark shades mixed 50/50 with some GW Lahmian Medum. After it dried, I glued to the base and heavily drybrushed it with various shades of dirt colored paints. Final step was attaching the crew and riders. I might add some more gear and hit it with a final coat of matte varnish.

I have to say, I was really looking forward to this project. The T-55 is one of my favorite tanks, its so iconic and has been used in alot of niche and lesser known conflicts. I love the look of old, battered, 3rd World T-55s with various kit and loot strapped on to them. I feel like this model captures that look although I probably need to add more junk to the storage!

Kallistra and Great Escape 12mm

 At the request of another gamer, here is a quick comparison of a Kallistra dragoon and a Great Escape British Officer. They go well together. I’d say the Kallistra is a little more slender in heft. I apologize for the comparison using a kneeling figure and a standing figure but I can seem to find my unpainted WW1 lead at the moment.

Palo Alto Continues...

I haven't posted much recently and I haven't posted abut my 10mm Mexican American War project in quite some time. That's not to say I haven't slowly been making progress. I've painted and based all of the regular Mexican infantry, cavalry and artillery for Palo Alto. Here are some cavalry and artillery:

Here is the Mexican 7th Line Cavalry in their post-1839 regulation uniforms. I opted to give them lighter tan and tan/white horses. Not sure if the buglers rode grey or white horses or if they wore reversed colored tunics.

Another picture. These photos were taken with an iPhone and the light wasn't perfect but I wanted to get some pictures up.

Cracker Line/Good Ground Miniatures recently released some artillery for the Mexicans. I picked some up and added them to my Palo Alto collection.

I have a total of 6 stands of artillery which will depict three Mexican batteries.

I painted the guns in unpainted, sun faded wood with dirty metal facings.

Here are some of my American regulars. So far I have 2 infantry regiments and one cavalry regiment. I opted to use the Mexican light infantry in fatigue uniforms from Cracker Line's range. I trimmed off the cap tassels and bugle badges. Most of the swords were removed and knapsack bags were added with green stuff. 

As you can see, I gave one unit the national flag and the other a regimental flag.

Some closeups of the infantry. The command figures (officer, standard bearer and drummer) are from Blaze Away's ACW Union figures. They were also sculpted by Robi Baker, so there is a continuity in sculpt size and style. I lopped off kepi tops and added a green stuff blob to give the impression of the 1839 cap.

I think the converted Mexican light infantry and the Blaze Away command give a good proxy for the US Infantry that are consistent with the Cracker Line Mexican's.

One last look at the converted infantry.

And here we have some American dragoons. Again, these are converted Blaze Away Union cavalry. The only thing converted wit them is the kepi has been converted to an 1839 forage cap via nippers, file and green stuff.

The Blaze Away cavalry have slightly smaller mounts and a little less fine detail but look the part when painted up.

I just bought some of the newly released American Flying Artillery and Mexican Generals. They will be next on the painting list followed by some "red leg" American infantry.

10mm French Revolutionary Wars

I have always been interested in the Wars of the First and Second Coalitions, especially the the chaotic early years that upended the Bourbon King. I’m obviously a big fan of 10mm so when I saw an eBay auction for some French and Austrians, I jumped on the opportunity and bought them at a very good price. 

I painted up a Demi Brigade featuring 2 battalions of Les Bleus and a battalion of Les Blancs. The bases are 40mm squares.

I added dice trays in the back of the bases to denote unit status. I started this project with the idea that I wanted a base to be a battalion and then looked for an appropriate ruleset that appealed to me. I found a set called “For King or Empress” which is designed for the Seven Years War. I thought a SYW set would be best for the War of the First Coalition, as the armies of the Ancien Regime still fought in old linear tactics. I would then tweak the French Army rules and stats to give them their unique tactics and characteristics. I downloaded the FKoE rules and liked them so much that I bought  the print version.

I still have a ways to go on this project but I have a clear plan and a ruleset (and one Demi Brigade) going forward. In the meantime, here are some closeups of the figures:

The Pendraken figures are some interesting sculpts and I absolutely love them. Not everyone’s cup of tea with their cartoonish, anatomically incorrect proportions but they are right up my alley. I mixed in a lot of phrigian caps and barrack caps in with the bicornes. There are also some striped pants, French  Revolutionary Armies need striped pants for the Sans Culottes!

Here are some Les Blancs. They are sporting the flag of the 9th Demi Brigade’s 2nd battalion. In hindsight, I forgot to see what this unit’s proper facing color was. Oh well!

I took some liberties with the flags, facings and other uniform items but this is more of a fun project than a serious one. I enjoyed painting up the figures and look forward to more. I will add some Magister Militum figures in for cavalry and allies for the Austrians. Any thoughts who I should use as allies? Dutch? German states of the HRE? Sardinians?

Off Topic: A Dragon Ogre

In high school, I played a good amount of Warhammer. I owned an Orc and Goblin army. My buddy had Dwarfs (or is it Dwarves?) and Chaos. He had a few dragon ogres and I always thought they were really cool sculpts. Years later, I decided to pick some up on ebay for relatively cheap. One of the sculpts was missing a hand so I bought a cheap Reaper sculpt (kobold maybe?) and used the sculpt's clenched fist with shield as a replacement for the dragon ogre.

Anyway, here is the finished dragon ogre. I painted a simple design on the shield which was inspired by the "time is a flat circle" imagery of the TV series True Detective. 

I gave the upper torso of the dragon ogre a greenish flesh tone which was achieved with a pale green followed by a green ink and an over brush of pale green mixed with pale flesh color. I'm pleased with the result but I am less pleased with the ogre's eyes. I am never good at eyes and rarely paint them but with a model this big I couldn't avoid it. I hope to tackle the rest of my dragon ogres, I think I have 5. Ultimately, I'd like to make an oldhammer chaos army comprised of dragon ogres and centaur type beasts. They'd have to be all OOP sculpts but not necessarily GW. We'll see.
